MoYu AoLong V6 vs V5: What Changed, and Which Should You Buy?

Short answer: On paper, the maxed-out AoLong V6 and V5 share the same core features: a 20-magnet ball core, MagLev, 100 magnets, and 64 setups. The V6 is 5g lighter (67g vs 72g), turns faster, feels lighter, and adds the brand new Nano Skin Feel option. Buy the V6 if you want the latest MoYu flagship or a non-glossy finish; buy the V5 if you want to save CA$3 on a proven cube.

What’s actually different

MoYu kept the V5’s internal system, including the carbon fibre core, cutting the weight from 72g to 67g. The spec sheet barely changes, so the real difference is how the cube feels in your hands. Andy’s notes after his first 100 solves:

  • Turning feel: out of the box, the V6 is faster, lighter, and louder than the Aolong V5. The lighter carbon fibre core means less rotational inertia, so it accelerates through algorithms, especially PLLs. The hollow pieces make it feel much less blocky, but they also act like a sound chamber: expect a sharper, louder clack on fast turns.
  • Corner cutting and stability:ย The corner cutting is amazing, and the small cuts feel effortless, and you will rarely get a pop. If your turning is aggressive or sloppy, expect only a few small lockups when solving.
  • Andy’s setup: the V6 is very fast out of the box, so set it up tighter for stability. Set the elasticity to 3 or 4 clicks to add resistance and stop the pieces from flexing and catching. Pair that with a slightly looser tension than the elasticity of 2 or 3 clicks, which keeps the cube together and stops overturning without sacrificing its corner cutting.
  • Andy’s lube combination: Put Angstrom Dignitas on the tracks to make it more controllable and plush. Add FZ-Calm for a better sound and more control, Mystic for speed and glide, and finish with FZ Rush for long-lasting speed. Together they turn the V6 into a fast, controllable, and super-smooth cube.

The spec sheet barely changes โ€” the real difference is how the cube feels in your hands.

Nano Skin Feel vs UV: is the CA$5 worth it?

The V6 is the first maxed-out AoLong offered in two finishes. UV coating is glossy, grippy, and scratch-resistant. Nano Skin Feel is a soft surface MoYu describes as soft and skin-like, built to resist wear and peeling.

  • Pick UV if your hands stay dry and you like a shiny cube that is easy to grip.
  • Pick Nano Skin if your hands get sweaty, you dislike fingerprints on glossy cubes, or you want a cube that feels different from everything else in your bag.
  • Andy, after a week with both: “The UV finish settles into a glossy, ultra-grippy shell that locks firmly into the hands but can feel sticky with sweat, whereas the Nano Skin Feel settles into a smooth, velvety soft texture that stays exceptionally clean and dry but offers less raw, tacky traction.”

FAQ

Is the AoLong V6 better than the V5?
